Meet Queen Bee, Jen!
Our third installment of the Queen Bees features the lovely Jennifer Turcotte. Jennifer is not only a talented architect and artist- she’s my cousin!
She is an exceptional painter and you can find her hand painted ceramics and glassware on Etsy. Her glassware or ceramics make excellent and unique gifts. I have special ordered a few things for personalized gifts for friends and hostess gifts for my bridal shower (see what I ordered here). Need a bachelorette or awesome Mother’s Day gift, check her out!
Now, on to our interview:
What is your profession?
I am an architect by day and a painter by night!
What did you go to school for? Major, degree concentration? Trade school, technical program, or other type of certifications, etc!
I majored in Architecture and minored in Art and Architectural History.
How long have you worked in the industry?
I have had my Etsy shop for close to 4 years and have been selling my painted glassware and ceramic mugs for a little over 5 years.
Any tips to someone starting their own business or side hustle?
Embrace any opportunity that comes your way and always explore new ways to network. Through all of these opportunities try and set small goals that are easily achievable to help move along your business's development. Large, all encompassing goals are great but can sometimes be overwhelming. Breaking those goals down into smaller "sub goals" helps to make you feel more productive.
If you could go back and tell your 24 year old self something, what would it be?
If I could go back to give my 24 year old self some words of wisdom I would tell myself to embrace every opportunity that comes your way. When starting out a business, or in my case side business, the only way to gain exposure is to really put yourself out there. Any way to connect with other artists or crafters has the potential to lead to new networking relationships, big or small.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
I hope to be in multiple shops in Rhode Island (where I am based) and maybe even branch into shops in Connecticut or Massachusetts!
Which one fits you best? Night owl or ‘early bird gets the worm?’
Favorite cartoon as a child?
My favorite cartoon as a child was definitely Charlie Brown.
Favorite dinner that you cook?
Armenian stuffed peppers and grape leaves.
Favorite movie of all time?
Favorite comedian or comedy show?
Current music obsession? *
Going it old school lately and loving all rock music from the 1970s.
What inspires you? (can be a person, cause, etc.)
Every woman in my family. They all have taught me so much individually. Without them I don’t think I would be where I am. They are my biggest fans and my best friends.
Favorite meal to order at a restaurant?
Sushi because it's something I could definitely never make on my own.
